God Speaks in Silence
The Holy Eucharist invites us to begin by sitting still, opening our senses to the place where we worship, the sacred symbols that signify the awesome and intimate presence of God, who meets us in the person of Jesus Christ and raises us to new life by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The musical prelude is our first act of worship. Curiously, it doesn’t require that we say or sing anything. It is a musical gift, which, like the grace of God, stirs in us the spirit of prayer. One way to receive it is to simply sit in silence and listen, allowing the music to tune our hearts to sing God’s praises.
As we listen to the music, we will be moved to pray, which might take the form of holding someone in our hearts in love. We pray for our neighbors in the pews and those who lead our worship. We express our intention for our time in worship and voice our desire for divine communion. We become alert to the gentle movement of the Spirit, and the “still small voice” of Love.
Our first act of Christian service is the hospitality we offer to those who gather with us to pray and worship. We offer a smile, a gesture of welcome, a hand in practical assistance. Above all, we invite them into the music and prayers by holding this space and time as sacred.
